Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) was founded by Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, popularly known as Dhirubhai, in 1977. The company went in for an initial public offering (IPO) in 1977, issuing 2.8 million shares of Rs10 each. The issue was oversubscribed seven times, strengthening Reliance’s growth ambitions. RIL was technically formed in 1985 when Reliance Textiles Industries Pvt. Ltd. was renamed as Reliance Industries Limited with the aim of expanding to other industries. Thereafter, RIL established its presence in petrochemicals, textiles, natural resources, retail, and telecommunications.
